Get the Exercise You Need While Keeping Safe
Texas summers are among the most brutal in the nation. The extreme heat can lead to dehydration, and on a more extreme level, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. With that in mind, difficult to keep up with one’s usual exercise regimen if it mostly takes place outside can be dangerous. Stay cool and healthy by implementing these tips.
Save your intense workouts for indoors
If possible, one of the best decisions you can make is to take your workouts indoors– especially those that really get your blood pumping, such as running, HIIT regimens, or weight lifting. Get in the safety of air conditioning, and your workout in safely.
Try water-based exercises
Instead of taking to the gym, take to the pool. There are a great deal of water-based activities that will serve as perfect exercise. Swim laps or do water aerobics in a pool. Have extra summer fun by heading to the ocean or a lake for water skiing, surfing, or wakeboarding. They will get your heart pumping while keeping cool, just remember to drink water and reapply sunscreen.
Exercise at certain times of day
The hottest hours of the day are between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, when the sun hits the earth most directly. The sun is most intense at hottest at these times. Avoid exercising outdoors during this timeframe. Instead, stick to earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Keep in the shade
If you are aware of places that will be well shaded– such as a park with good tree coverage– confine your exercise to that area. The protection from the sun will help keep you cool and reduce risk of sun damage. For an even better experience, exercise in the shade in the morning and evening.
Run in the rain
If you’re a runner who prefers a natural setting instead of a gym, consider going for a run when rain showers are forecasted, not after the rain clears. Post-rain, temperatures and humidity are bound to rise. The rain will help cool you off. Just make sure your valuables are protected and that there is no lightning anticipated.
Protect your skin
Do not forget to apply sunscreen before any of your outdoor activities, and keep applying the longer you are out. The intense sun rays can lead to skin damage and even cancer, so it is important to keep oneself safe. Wearing clothing that is light in color will better reflect the sun’s rays, which will help prevent overheating and skin damage.
Stay hydrated!
Water is crucial to literally every bodily function, yet must people don’t drink enough water in the first place. Staying hydrated in the summer is especially important. Make sure you pre-hydrate before your exercise regimen, make sure you drink water throughout, and rehydrate when you finish. Your body will thank you.
