Take Advantage of the Season and Get in Shape!

Many think summer is the time to get in shape– the sun is out, and a multitude of activities abound. While any time of year is the right time of year to get in shape, for those of us who live in the state of Texas, they know the summer months aren’t exactly the most hospitable. For those who like to exercise outdoors, fall is the best time of year. Keep reading to see some of the best ways to get your blood pumping while enjoying the cooler weather.

Go for a walk or run

Going on regular walks is the best way to get in some easy, low-impact exercise in. Take to one of your favorite neighborhoods or parks and get your fill of the changing scenery. If you want to work up more of a sweat, go for a run. You’re less liable to overheat with the drop in temperature and might even find you can run further than you could in the summer months. Sandwich your run with a walk to get the most out of the experience.

Get on your bike

Bike rides are another great way to burn some calories. If you know the terrain in your area, you can take a path that is more leisurely, or one with more hills that will push you even harder. When it starts to get a bit colder, you don’t have to give up on your bike-riding. Purchasing a stationary bike or taking to your local gym will allow you to keep up with this form of exercise.

Go for a hike

Hiking is a form of exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise, but most certainly is, especially when you take a friend. Walking among nature, taking in views, and engaging in conversation makes you forget about your burning legs and just focus on the fun. During the fall, you have even more to be distracted by, making for some great photo-ops while you walk.

Engage in outdoor sports

The brisk weather makes fall sports all the more enjoyable. Grab a group of friends, a soccer ball, and start playing. If you want something a bit more organized, you’re in luck. During the fall, many sports pickup again– from soccer, to basketball, to football, and so much more. This gives you the opportunity to not only hone your skills with a ball, but maybe meet some new people, which is so important for keeping accountable with your exercise.

Join a group class

When the season creeps closer to winter and you find you don’t want to take to the outdoors to get in your daily exercise, joining some sort of group class is a great option. Having a scheduled commitment of a yoga or spin class makes you more likely to show up, as you are not only paying for it, but there are people expecting you to show up. Having a buddy system, especially in the colder months of the year, is the best way to stay motivated.
