What is a Fad Diet, and Why Should You Avoid Them?

When you think of “fad diet,” there are a few that might come to mind: gluten-free, apple cider vinegar diet, alkaline diet, Paleolithic diet, etc. But what exactly is a fad diet?

Simply said, a fad diet is a a trendy diet that promises quick and easy weight loss. Many promise that you don’t even have to exercise– all you have to do is follow these rules, and the extra pounds will fall off. It sounds too good to be true, and that’s because they are. Since most involve eliminating food groups completely, you’ll likely experience nutritional deficiencies. And more often than not, once you have completed the fad diet, you’ll gain the weight right back as you reestablish old habits.

How do you know if it’s a fad diet?

Fad diets don’t advertise that is what they are. It takes some critical thinking to be able to identify them. Some quick ways to tell if a new diet trend is a fad diet are:

  • Unrealistic claims of fast and easy weight loss
  • Totally eliminating certain food groups
  • Claim that foods need to be “properly combined” for proper digestion
  • Reliance on supplements instead of exercise and diet
  • Claim that exercise is not necessary
